Bihongora Project

Bihongora Project

EAP’s Bihongora Hydropower Project (BHPP), a 4.22 MW small hydropower initiative located on the Bihongora River in Rwanda’s Western Province. This region, with its steep hills, high rainfall, and abundant natural streams, is ideal for small run-of-river hydro projects. Despite these natural advantages, the area faces significant socio-economic challenges, including high poverty rates, limited employment opportunities, and low agricultural productivity.

Bihongora Hydropower Ltd (BHL), the special project vehicle (SPV) for BHPP, is tackling these challenges head-on by delivering clean energy to the regional grid and leveraging the project’s resources to uplift local communities. BHL’s vision goes beyond energy production; it includes fostering local economic growth, electrifying households, and launching social and educational programs under the Empowering Villages (EV) Program. This initiative, in partnership with Solarkiosk, aims to use the clean energy generated by the hydropower plant to create a substantial social impact.

As the first initiative under the EV Program, The Pulse Center is pioneering the implementation and operation of a network of solar-powered rural hubs. These hubs are designed to serve as vibrant platforms for various commercial and entertainment activities, directly benefiting the communities around the power plant. We aim to provide spaces where local residents can access new economic opportunities, participate in community-driven projects, and engage in educational and recreational activities. Our goal is to foster a more vibrant and empowered local community.

Through our efforts at The Pulse Center, in collaboration with BHL and Solarkiosk, we aspire to transform the socio-economic landscape of this region. By harnessing the power of renewable energy, we aim to create lasting and meaningful change. Our holistic approach integrates sustainable energy solutions with community development initiatives, promoting both environmental sustainability and social progress.
